Scientific Services

I offer consulting in several areas of science as well as scientific editing. I also offer courses in various aspects of modelling, such as ecological modelling and fuzzy systems theory. Details of these courses along with related reports and class presentations are available on my modelling website.

While I normally work on a personal contract basis, I am also registered as a one-person firm with the Portuguese government under the name Hipóteses e Respostas Unipessoal Lda, N° 508175534. This may be more convenient if you work in an agency that does not encourage contracts for personal services.

William Silvert

I am a semi-retired Canadian scientist living in Portugal. I have a Ph. D. in Theoretical Physics (Brown University, 1965) and have been working in oceanography and marine ecology since the late 1970's.

At present I am a Senior Research Fellow in DAA (Departamento de Ambiente Aquático = Department of Aquatic Environment) at IPIMAR (Instituto de Investigação das Pescas e do Mar = Portuguese Institute for Fisheries and Sea Research) and am a fellow (Sócio) of the Centre for Marine Sciences at the University of the Algarve. For further information and detailed information on my research, please consult my general web site.

My scientific work involves me in numerous activities which do not have their own websites but merit a degree of exposure. Some of these are real scientific sites while others are just respositories for photographs I took at meetings. These include:
bulletEnvironmental Impacts of Mariculture (EIM), This site deals with various EIM projects, including the proceedings of a workshop I helped organise in 1995 and some material related to a response by the research community to papers which we felt incorrectly attacked aspects of aquaculture.
bulletModelling, a site dedicated to various aspects of model development including both ecological modelling and the use of fuzzy logic.
bulletPhotographs from a meeting of the ICES Working Group on Zooplanton Taxonomy in Plymouth in 2003.
bulletPhotographs from a meeting of EFEP, the European Fisheries Ecosystem Plan in Lisbon in 2003.
bulletPhotographs from EMBS38, the European Marine Biological Symposium meeting in Aveiro, Portugal, in September 2003.
bulletA group photo of the participants in a meeting of the INTERACT CLUSTER in 2003.
bulletAn exercise in error propagation through ecosystem models.
bulletAn Excel spreadsheet demonstrating chaos in the Ricker model.
