Fuzzy Applications to Fisheries

In March 2001 I completed a project on the application of Fuzzy Logic to the Traffic Light Method used in association with the Precautionary Approach to Fisheries Management for the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). The report of this project is currently available through the courtesy of DFO (you can read about the evaluation of this work for fisheries management in the published proceedings of the June 2001 meeting of the Fisheries Management Studies Working Group). There is a PowerPoint presentation that summarises the work and another PowerPoint presentation describing the Fuzzy Traffic Light Method that was prepared for the ICES Study Group on the Precautionary Approach in Lisbon, March 2002. I presented a sample application to NAFO TACs for the ICES Study Group on the Precautionary Approach (SGPA).

Alberto Murta and I also wrote a short report called "A framework to put in practice a precautionary approach to fisheries assessment based on fuzzy set theory" for the SGPA.
